Malcolm P

I have spent the better part of five decades working inside businesses that make things, build things, and operate at the complex intersection of people, production, and commercial reality.

That experience – across manufacturing, industrial operations, enterprise systems, and direct structural advisory – is what OXXEGENHorizon is built on. Not a theory. Not a framework borrowed from somewhere else. A working understanding of what makes businesses perform structurally, and what stops them.

OXXEGENHorizon exists because the Hidden Champions of Australian manufacturing have always deserved structural advisory that fits their world. Most of them have never had it. This is the gap this practice is designed to fill.

Where the understanding comes from

The work that shaped my understanding of what makes businesses perform – and what stops them – was not done in consulting firms or business schools. It was done inside real organisations, in real operational contexts, across twenty-seven countries over five decades.

I have worked in enterprise systems and large-scale technology operations through Fujitsu Australia – where the challenge was always how to make complex systems function in the real conditions of real businesses, not in the controlled conditions of a specification document. I have worked in advanced manufacturing and semiconductor equipment through Brooks Automation in Boston – where the structural conditions of a  technical manufacturing organisation, operating at the intersection of precision engineering and global supply chains, were the daily operating reality.

Across those roles and the decades between and after them, the pattern I observed consistently was this: the businesses that performed well over time were not the ones with the best strategy or the most capital. They were the ones with the most coherent internal architecture – where authority was clear, decisions were made at the right level, management had genuine room to operate, and the governance arrangements reflected the actual complexity of the business.

The businesses that struggled – even with good people, good products, and capable leadership – were consistently the ones where the architecture had not kept pace with the scale. Where the structure that worked at an earlier stage was still in place at a later one, generating costs and constraints that showed up everywhere except the one place where they could be addressed: the structural design of the business itself.

Why Hidden Champions

The Hidden Champions of Australian manufacturing are the businesses I have found most consistently underserved by the advisory profession. Not because advisers don’t care about them – but because the advisory models available have never been designed for the specific structural challenges the segment faces.

These are businesses that have built operational capability, hold genuine market positions, and employ real people doing real work. They have reached a stage where the structural questions – how decisions are made, how authority is distributed, how capacity is designed, how governance works – are the questions that most determine whether the next decade looks like the last one or is significantly better.

These are exactly the questions OXXEGENHorizon is designed to address.

How the work is done

I work directly with the business owner or the senior leadership team. Not through a team of analysts working in the background. Not through a program manager overseeing a process. Directly – which is the only way this kind of work is useful.

The work begins with a genuine examination of the structural condition of the business: how it is currently designed to make decisions, where authority sits, what the management achitecture looks like, and what is constraining the business’s ability to perform at its current scale and the next one.

That examination produces a clear view of the structural condition and a deliberate response to it. Not a report that sits on a shelf. Not a set of tools to implement. A working understanding of what needs to change and how to change it – built and tested in the actual context of the business, not applied from the outside.

I work with a small number of businesses at any one time. That is a deliberate choice. The work requires genuine attention, and genuine attention cannot be delivered across a large client list. If the timing doesn’t work, I will say so directly.

If you are the owner or leader of a Hidden Champion business and you want to understand whether this work is relevant to your situation, the starting point is a direct conversation.
